Building International Solidarity: Networking for Strategic Change

We believe that international solidarity should be an essential part of any union’s strategic plan to make the world a better place for workers. On November 3rd join union members and representatives from local, provincial and national union international solidarity committees to share experiences and discuss practical strategies for international solidarity work. This workshop-style forum will include presentations and small-group discussions about how to make international solidarity meaningful to your members and central to your union’s vision.

The workshop is designed as a way for more-experienced solidarity activists to share experiences with each other, as well as for less-experienced members to learn about what has worked in other contexts. We will keep it as practical as possible, so that participants will come away with concrete ideas for building international solidarity networks in their unions. This part of the workshop will build on themes we have presented in the past, and will be presented by Janet Routledge, union activist and NDP-BC candidate for Burnaby North. As the former regional director for the PSAC, Janet knows first-hand about the practical side of organizing and community-building. Her workshop will give participants hands-on practice for using international solidarity as an organizing tool within your communities.

Yessika Hoyos (centre)

Our special guest this year is the dynamic Yessika Hoyos, a Colombian human rights lawyer. Recipient of the 2008 AFL-CIO’s George Meany-Lane Kirkland Human Rights award, Ms. Hoyos works with CCAJAR, a renowned human rights law firm in Bogotá. She will make a presentation on the issues facing trade unionists and human rights defenders in Colombia today.

CoDev continues to strengthen the community of union-based international solidarity activists in BC, and this workshop builds on the important work we have done in past years. Please encourage your staff and members to attend, since it promises to be an exciting and inspiring day that will provide concrete tools.
