Berenice Celeyta, of CoDev's partner NOMADESC, and several other leaders from the south western region of Colombia received new death threats late last week. 27Apr2010: Café Ético Coffee Partner under Threat
Café Ético is proud to import coffee from the Campesino Committee of the Highlands (CCDA), a Mayan farmers’ association that uses the profits from their coffee sales to fund their social justice work in Guatemala. National Coordinator Leocadio Juracán and the CCDA have recently been the subject of escalating threats, which culminated in anonymous death threats to both Leocadio and his family after the CCDA presented a report on violence against activists in Guatemala. As a result, the Juracáns have come to Vancouver temporarily in order to ensure their safety.
Such an occurrence shows the reality of Guatemala: while the civil war may have ended almost 15 years ago, the inequitable power structures and division of wealth that gave rise to the 36-year armed conflict are still very much in existence.
Take Action!
