More than 20 years of building partnerships for global justice.
CoDev is a BC-based non-profit agency that works for social change and global education in the Americas. CoDev was founded in 1985 by a group of activists who wanted to go beyond simply sending financial aid to Latin American countries. We believe that partnerships between like-minded organizations, in Canada and Latin America can be vehicles for learning, social change, and personal empowerment.
Urgent Appeal: Cuba/Hurricane Ike
Dear friends and supporters,
As many of you will have heard and read, Cuba has been battered by no less than two Category 4 hurricanes in the first week of September. While Cuba’s efficient Civil Defence System managed to keep fatalities to only 4 deaths, the property and crop damage are staggering, and it will take some time for the country to fully recover. Cuba has not seen this kind of destruction in decades.
Many of you are probably wondering how you can help and you may have even started raising funds in your community. We have received appeals for support from partners in Cuba, and we are working hard to get information and plans for rebuilding. We are attaching more information on the scope of the hurricanes.
Because of the nature of cooperation with Cuba, and the incredible network of solidarity within Cuba, we are encouraging friends and supporters to make donations in one of two ways:
To CoDev Directly
CoDev can issue tax receipts for all donations over $20 that are made towards these relief efforts. Please note that 100% of all donations will be sent directly overseas to our partners. Funds raised through CoDev will be sent to the Cuban teachers’ and public service unions to assist with relief and reconstruction efforts.
Donations can be made by cheque to CoDevelopment Canada, with "Cuba Hurricane” in the memo line. Send cheques to CoDevelopment Canada at #260 - 2747 East Hastings St., Vancouver, BC, V5K 1Z8. CoDev can also accept donations by VISA, by calling our offices at 604-708-1495.
Donations can be made through our website, http://www.codev.org/ by clicking on the Canada Helps button, and putting a note in the memo (there is a 3% charge to CoDev for this service).
To the Canadian-Cuba Friendship Association
Donations can be made by cheque to Canadian-Cuban Friendship Association, clearly stating “For Cuba Hurricane Relief”. The local committee will send one cheque together with a list of the individual donors to the Mackenzie-Papineau Memorial Fund. Tax receipts will then be issued to individual donors. Send cheques to the Canadian-Cuban Friendship Association, Box 57063 - 2480 East Hastings, Vancouver, BC, V5K 5G6. For more information: www.ccfavancouver.ca .
If you need more information, please contact Carol Wood or Steve Stewart at 604-708-1495 or codev@codev.org.
Thank you for your support and solidarity,
The CoDev Team
