Christmas 2024 message from CODEMUH.
We are thrilled to welcome our partners from Honduras all the way to Vancouver! It’s a true privilege to host Maria Luisa Regalado from CODEMUH (Collective of Honduran Women)—a grassroots organization doing extraordinary work in the face of immense challenges. CODEMUH is courageously taking on one of the most powerful industries in the world: the maquila sector.
From documenting human rights and labour violations, to providing critical health and legal support for women workers, to organizing inside factories and pushing for legislative reform, CODEMUH’s work is an inspiring example of frontline resistance and deep-rooted solidarity.
They are not only demanding justice in the workplace but they are also reshaping what labour rights can look like in Honduras. Their advocacy has helped expose dangerous working conditions and is driving national dialogue around the urgent need to improve health and accommodation laws for all workers.
We can’t wait for the Vancouver community to hear directly from Maria Luisa about this essential, courageous work and to build connections between struggles happening here in Canada and across Latin America.
Maria Luisa has spent decades fighting for the health, dignity, and labour rights of women workers in the sweatshop industry. Her work documenting abuses and advocating for labour code reform has made her one of the most respected voices in Honduras’s labour movement.
In this unique gathering, we will draw connections between the struggles of maquila workers in Honduras and workers organizing in Canada, in fulfillment centers, care workers and other precarious industries. Together, we’ll explore how solidarity across borders strengthens the fight for justice everywhere.
