In the face of the U.S. fuel blockade, Canada must work with other countries to support Cuba

POWER UP CUBA! ACTION GUIDE

CoDevelopment Canada invites our members and supporters to show your solidarity and call on Canada to work with other countries to support Cuba.

1. If you have just a few minutes, here’s what you can do:

Sign this House of Commons petition e-7082 that calls on the Government of Canada to support Cuba and other Latin American and Caribbean countries and to reject U.S. aggression in the region.

Sign this online letter to the Prime Minister, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Secretary of State (International Development), and others that calls on the Government of Canada to reject U.S. measures that block fuel from reaching Cuba and work with other countries in a variety of ways to show solidarity and support Cuba. From our friends at Common Frontiers.

Our Cuban union partners invite allies to join the I Sign for Cuba campaign to demonstrate their commitment to peace in the Caribbean and respect for Cuba's self-determination and sovereignty.

2. If you have a bit more time, you can write a letter!

Use the points raised in the Common Frontiers online letter to write a personal letter to your MP. Be courteous but firm. Canada must support Cuba and reject U.S. aggression in the region. And not just with empty promises or platitudes about international legal frameworks and obligations. You may want to include some or all of the following points:

We say “NO” to U.S. threats of war on Cuba.
Why doesn’t the Canadian government?

The unlawful U.S. fuel blockade is inflicting mass suffering on the people of Cuba, violating their rights to life and health. Now, the Trump administration is threatening military attack.

We raise our voices with millions of people in Canada and around the world who say “NO” to this injustice. We urgently call on Prime Minister Mark Carney to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Cuba, cornerstone rights of all states under international law.

Canada must:

  • Publicly oppose and work to stop a U.S. military intervention in Cuba

  • Speak out forcefully against unlawful U.S. coercive measures to withhold fuel and starve the Cuban people

  • Work more determinedly with the United Nations and other countries to get fuel and other life-sustaining supplies to Cuba without delay

A directory of Canadian Members of Parliament and their email and mailing addresses is HERE. The good news is, sending a letter to your MP (and any MP) is free, no postage necessary!

3. Or how about booking a visit with your MP?

Your Member of Parliament wants to meet you and learn what’s on your mind, what better time than now! Grab a buddy for mutual support, select just a few points you want to make and a clear ask to close the deal. Show your solidarity! Never met with your MP? Here is a two-page guide to get you started.

4. Give now to the Power Up Cuba! emergency fundraising campaign!

This will only take a minute! Give now to the CoDevelopment Canada POWER UP CUBA! emergency fundraising campaign. Over the first two weeks of the campaign we raised over $45,000, help us keep the momentum going! By the way, we have already secured solar generators for our Cuban partners, and food is on the way, which more to come.
